The Malaysia Smart Manufacturing Awards (MSMA) 2025 has revealed clear, practical lessons from award-winning projects and nominees, highlighting how Malaysian manufacturers are progressing from basic digitalisation to connected intelligence that supports global competitiveness.
Co-organised by MIDF, Bizsphere and Smart4wrd, and endorsed by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), MSMA 2025 brought together more than 400 industry stakeholders at Menara MATRADE. While 25 companies were recognised across multiple categories, organisers emphasised that the real value of MSMA lies in what the wider manufacturing community can learn from the journeys behind these projects.
Why Companies Start the Smart Manufacturing Journey
Across winners and nominees, companies consistently pointed to market demand as the main driver, alongside operational challenges such as wastage, inconsistent quality, long lead times and rising customer expectations. Government grants and structured programmes were also found to significantly accelerate progress, particularly during the early stages of adoption.
“Smart manufacturing doesn’t begin with technology — it begins with business pressure and leadership clarity,” said Yap Keng Teck, Founder & Chief Business Strategist of Bizsphere and Head of the Smart4wrd Ecosystem. “The most successful companies are those that treat digitalisation as a business strategy, not an IT project.”
From Factory Data to Connected Intelligence
A key shift observed at MSMA 2025 is that Malaysian manufacturers have moved beyond merely generating data from factory operations. Many award-winning companies are now connecting data across production, quality, supply chain and management functions, transforming raw data into actionable intelligence.
This connected intelligence enables faster decision-making, better alignment with customer and export requirements, and stronger positioning in global markets — marking an important step in the maturity of Malaysia’s smart manufacturing ecosystem.
“What we are seeing is a clear shift — data alone is no longer the goal. The winners are using connected intelligence to make better decisions and compete globally,” Yap added.
What Drives Success — and What Still Holds Companies Back
Successful projects shared three common drivers: a structured roadmap, management’s ability to align smart manufacturing initiatives with business goals, and leadership by example from top management.
At the same time, recurring barriers remain, including over-reliance on vendors, uncertainty about return on investment (ROI), and fear of operational disruption or future cost escalation. While many companies have started their journey, some remain hesitant to openly share their experiences — limiting collective learning within the ecosystem.
Strong Ecosystem Support Remains Available
MSMA 2025 highlighted that manufacturers continue to have access to strong support, including incentives such as Smart Tech Up, Automation Capital Allowance and COSIF, financing support from MIDF and partner banks, credible solution providers under Smart4wrd and MDEC SmartMFG+, as well as reskilling and upskilling programmes from SHRDC, HRD Corp and MyDigital.

Beyond Awards: Building the Next Wave of Smart Manufacturers
Organisers hope the insights from MSMA 2025 will encourage more manufacturers — especially SMEs — to start earlier, plan more strategically and collaborate more openly.
“Our mission goes beyond recognising winners,” Yap said. “We want to strengthen Malaysia’s manufacturing value chain by connecting industry, government and solution providers — and prove that public-private partnership works when we move forward together.”
